Funding options for clinical beds and mattresses

In Australia, a clinical bed or pressure care mattress is usually funded through one of four programs: the NDIS, a Home Care Package (HCP), the new Support at Home (SAH) program, or the Commonwealth Home Support Programme (CHSP). Which one applies depends on the client's age, disability status and existing package. Sleep Choice provides the trial reports and clinical documentation accepted by all four.

Support at Home (SAH)
Support at Home has replaced the previous HCP model. Under SAH, clinical beds and pressure care mattresses are funded through the Assistive Technology and Home Modifications (AT HM) pathway. This is separate from ongoing care funding.
Understanding the change
Under the old HCP system, beds and mattresses were paid from the client's package budget which competed with personal care, nursing and domestic support. Under SAH, these items sit in their own dedicated funding stream which means they are easier to approve, faster to access and do not reduce care hours.

Home Care Package (HCP)
Home Care Packages can fund clinical beds, adjustable beds, hi lo beds and pressure care mattresses under the assistive technology category. These items support safety, mobility, pressure injury prevention and skin integrity.
