Pain and Chronic Condition Solutions

Adjustable positioning and matched mattresses for chronic pain, arthritis, post-surgical recovery and palliative comfort.

What is pain and chronic condition, and why does bed choice matter?

Sleep equipment for chronic pain and palliative comfort combines an adjustable bed frame, for independent head and knee positioning, with a therapeutic mattress matched to the client's body weight and skin integrity. In Australia this setup is commonly prescribed for chronic back pain, arthritis, post-surgical recovery and end-of-life care. Sleep Choice trials the full configuration in the client's home for 7 nights so posture and comfort can be validated before any purchase decision.

    The clinical picture

Chronic pain rarely presents alone. It sits alongside reduced mobility, disturbed sleep, anxiety about the night ahead, and often a partner or family carer whose own sleep has been eroded for months. The right bed and mattress cannot cure the underlying condition, but they can remove the mechanical contributors that make pain worse overnight.

    For families

If your family member is spending the night moving between the bed, a recliner and a pile of pillows trying to find a position that works, the bed itself is part of the problem. A powered adjustable bed lets them find a supported posture and stay in it, without a partner or carer needing to reposition pillows every two hours.

    For clinicians and OTs

For post-surgical recovery, 30 to 45 degree head elevation combined with a 15 to 20 degree knee raise offloads the lumbar spine and reduces incisional strain. For chronic arthritic pain, knee-only elevation is often the higher-value adjustment. Mattress selection should reflect BMI, skin integrity and whether the client is bed-bound or actively mobile.

What we look for when matching pain and chronic condition

These are the clinical signals our team weighs during the pre-trial planning call, before any equipment leaves the warehouse.

    Pain distribution and pattern

Location of pain (lumbar, cervical, joint-specific) directs which sections of the bed need independent articulation.

    Post-surgical or palliative context

Recent surgery or palliative care shifts the priority from long-term durability to immediate comfort and carer safety.

    Existing sleep position preference

A lifelong side sleeper will not tolerate a hospital-style bed. We match the frame to the client, not the reverse.

    Time to peak morning stiffness

Clients who wake in significant pain benefit most from adjustable positioning through the night, not just at bedtime.

    Partner and carer setup

Split King configurations let a partner remain in the same bed without disturbing the client's positioning.

    Mattress firmness match

Very soft mattresses worsen postural pain. Medium-firm therapeutic foam or self-adjusting hybrid is our default starting point.

How the 7-night trial works for pain and chronic condition

A showroom cannot replicate a client's bedroom at 3am. Every trial below is delivered, set up and demonstrated in the client's own home by our team, then reviewed on day 7.

    1. 01

During the pre-trial planning call we confirm the client's primary pain sites, any recent surgery or palliative context, and current sleep position. This determines whether we send a standard adjustable, a split configuration, or a Hi-Lo profiling bed for palliative access.

    2. 02

On delivery day the team installs the bed in the client's own bedroom, walks the client through preset positions (zero-gravity, TV, sleep, egress), and confirms the mattress firmness feels supportive rather than sinking.

    3. 03

For the next 7 nights the client uses the bed under real conditions. Chronic pain is not a showroom judgement, it is a 3am judgement. Partners and carers give feedback too, because their sleep matters to the outcome.

    4. 04

On day 7 we review. If positioning or mattress firmness needs adjustment we swap the mattress or reconfigure. If the setup is not right at all, we collect the bed at no cost and no invoice is issued.

“Being able to raise the head and knee break independently overnight, in her own room, meant she finally stopped waking every two hours from lumbar pain. The family knew by night three this was the right bed.”

Funding pathways for pain and chronic condition

Sleep Choice provides the trial report, product specification pack and OT-ready clinical notes required for each scheme. See our full funding options guide for eligibility and step-by-step process.

    NDIS

Adjustable beds prescribed for pain management, positioning or post-surgical recovery are supported under NDIS Capital Supports. We provide the AT assessment inputs and trial report.

    HCP

Home Care Package funds cover adjustable beds and therapeutic mattresses when clinically justified. Package managers usually require an itemised quote and OT recommendation.

    DVA

DVA Gold Card holders with clinical eligibility for pain management can access adjustable beds through the RAP program on OT prescription.

Pain and Chronic Condition frequently asked questions

Yes. Independently adjustable head and knee sections offload the lower back, reduce pressure on inflamed joints, and allow the client to find a neutral, supported posture that is difficult to achieve on a flat bed. This is particularly effective for clients with chronic back pain, arthritis and post-surgical recovery.
